MANNSVILLE, Okla. - Mannsville City Manager Shonda Lou Barnes was arrested Monday on 11 felony counts accusing her of submitting false voter registration affidavits ahead of Oklahoma's June primary election.

The Johnston County Sheriff's Office arrested Barnes around 5:18 p.m. Aug. 31 at her Mannsville residence. She was booked into the Johnston County Jail on 11 counts of false affidavit in voter registration.

The investigation began May 26 after the Johnston County Election Board contacted the Sheriff's Office about concerns involving voter registration applications submitted from the Mannsville area.

The applications were submitted before the May registration deadline for voters seeking to participate in the June 16 primary election.

Investigators examining the applications found that several contained matching signatures that did not belong to the people who were being registered to vote, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Authorities did not specify how many voter registration applications were examined, identify the people whose information appeared on them or say whether any ballots were ultimately cast using the disputed registrations.

The Johnston County Sheriff's Office investigated the case and forwarded its findings to the Johnston County District Attorney's Office for review.

An arrest warrant was issued Aug. 31, and deputies arrested Barnes later that day.

"As one of Oklahoma's 77 constitutionally elected sheriffs, it is our duty and the duty of every Sheriff's Office in this State to protect the integrity of our elections, one of the most sacred rights of citizens of this country," Johnston County Sheriff Gary Dodd said.
