PURCELL, Okla. — A McClain County investigation into stolen oilfield equipment has led to the arrest of a Washington, Oklahoma, man accused of operating a theft scheme that investigators say stretched across multiple counties and states.
The investigation began on Oct. 2, 2023, when the McClain County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a stolen pump jack from a property in Purcell.
While investigating that case, deputies received information about a second theft reported on Feb. 7, 2025, involving another stolen pump jack from a property near Cole. Investigators said the equipment taken in that theft was valued at more than $40,000.
As the investigation expanded, the McClain County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
According to the OSBI, special agents determined the thefts were part of a larger organized criminal enterprise involving stolen oilfield equipment across multiple Oklahoma counties and other states.
Investigators identified 42-year-old Jonathan Stamper as a suspect. Authorities allege Stamper stole oilfield equipment from various locations, removed manufacturers' identification plates and serial numbers, and then created replacement serial number plates that were attached to the equipment.
On June 9, 2026, OSBI agents and McClain County Sheriff's Office deputies executed a search warrant at Stamper's residence in Washington, Oklahoma.
Stamper was arrested and booked into the McClain County Jail on two counts of Grand Larceny of Oilfield Equipment and one count of Trespass and Damage of Critical Infrastructure Facility.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
