Man Charged With Murder After Deadly Shooting and Officer-Involved Incident in Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — A man has been charged with murder following a shooting that led to an officer-involved shooting earlier this year, according to Oklahoma City police.

Authorities said Steven Saathoff, 49, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 22-year-old Colten Saathoff. The case is being counted as Oklahoma City’s 20th homicide of 2026.

The incident occurred on February 16, 2026, around 5:57 p.m. in the 5200 block of Harmon Drive.

Police said an officer in the area was alerted to a possible shooting. Master Sergeant Mathew Nelson, a 19-year veteran of the department, responded and encountered Steven Saathoff armed with a pistol and actively firing.

An armed confrontation followed, during which Nelson shot Steven Saathoff. He was transported to a hospital, where he survived.

Investigators determined the incident began when Colten Saathoff approached neighbors outside their trailer and began firing a pistol at them. Police said he also struck a woman in the face before the neighbors fled inside their home.

Authorities said Steven Saathoff then took the firearm from his son and entered the neighbors’ trailer, where he fired additional shots at a man inside.

He later returned to his own trailer, where officers encountered him, leading to the confrontation with police.

Officers subsequently found Colten Saathoff dead inside the trailer with apparent gunshot wounds.

Initially, investigators said it was unclear whether Colten Saathoff died by suicide or was killed by his father. Following further investigation, Steven Saathoff was charged with first-degree murder.

MSgt. Nelson has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The case remains under investigation.
